The piece is an homage to the church's history and evokes the dedication and tenacity required of its parishioners to maintain a strong community during a tumultuous century. Five Snapshots of a Languorous Day
Sophia Bracken - Clarinet
Sarah Cummings - Viola
Recorded live at Peabody Institute November 17th, 2021
Program note: I wrote Five Snapshots of a Languorous Day as a freshman in the spring semester of 2021, when the world was still shut down from COVID-19. It was a unique challenge finding direction and purpose in my daily routine during those months without the structure of outside musical projects and a normal school routine. All my time was simply empty time, and I fought to allocate that time between Work, both academic and artistic, and rejuvenating Rest. Especially difficult was staying mindful of my “Rest Time,” and I quickly observed a difference between positive Rest and wasteful laziness. What came out of these experiences was Five Snapshots, which is an expression of the dynamic between inner calm, sleep, and laziness. It embraces the pleasures of relaxation while admitting that not all leisure is refreshing, or even healthy. It cherishes the peace acquired from a good night’s sleep but apprehends the anxiety that may come of lethargy. I have learned that there are many faces of Rest, and Five Snapshots is my journey to understanding a few of those faces.
